Mayor Buckhorn looking to bring free Wi-Fi to urban parks

Tampa, Florida -- Visitors to Tampa's urban parks may soon be able to enjoy the great outdoors and stay connected without having to use up any minutes on their cellular plans.

On Tuesday, Mayor Buckhorn released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a provider who can offer free, outdoor wireless internet access in Tampa's urban parks.

"Wi-Fi will be a draw, particularly for the thousands of visitors who come down to the parks throughout our urban core, and a great amenity for the residents who live around them," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn.

Emergency electric bill payment help offered in Hillsborough

Hillsborough County, Florida-- Are you struggling to make ends meet? If so, you may qualify for financial assistance from the Family and Aging Services Department's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program for Hillsborough County Residents, also known as LIHEAP. 

Program coordinators say LIHEAP is a federally funded initiative that helps low-income residents with payments on their delinquent electric bills.

Officers rescue man from burning car

Tampa, Florida -- Seven Tampa Police Officers helped save a man from a burning car after a serious traffic crash.

Around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a traffic crash involving two cars. It was reported that one of the vehicles was on fire and the occupant was trapped inside the car.

Upon arrival, officers found a 1994 Monte Carlo was on fire with an unconscious occupant trapped inside. As the officers tried to remove the trapped individual from the burning vehicle they used fire extinguishers in an attempt to extinguish the fire.

Detectives searching for robbery suspects in Tampa

Tampa, Florida -- Detectives are looking for two suspects who stole money from River High Cleaners on North Boulevard.

According to reports, the two suspects walked through the rear of the business around 1:45 a.m. on June 16. One suspect walked to the front cash register of the business and pointed a black handgun at the victim/employee, while the other stood at the back entrance area.

The first suspect ordered the victim to open the cash register after which, the suspect reached inside, took out the currency and quickly ran out the rear the business. 

Kitchen fire evacuates apartment

Tampa, Florida -- Rescue units were sent to the apartments at Stevens Court for a kitchen fire. 

When firefighters arrived on scene around 11:20 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, residents were already evacuating the building.

Fire crews went to the third floor where the fire was located and began to extinguish the fire. Firefighters were able to quickly contain and confine the fire to the kitchen of the apartment where it originated. 

Further investigation ruled the fire to be a cooking fire and accidental.
